On this week's REWIND, hang out with AWS's Principal Evangelist for Video Games, Chris Melissinos, REWINDS to the year 1991 and explores the 2D arcade / home console crossover, the Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System (AES). This BEAST of a console hit the home market with a then unheard of proposition: play the ACTUAL arcade games at home, and continue playing in arcades.
The original mascot for the launch of the Neo Geo was a snarling, rabid looking dog and early cartridges that included the logo are known as “dog-tag” editions. That attitude was meant to let players know that they owned the biggest and baddest console available. While that was true, it was also the most expensive console ever released, at $650 ($1,530 in today’s dollars!), and cartridges starting at $200 ($470 in 2023) and up, only the richest kids could afford it.
The Neo Geo AES remains a highly collectible system with a fantastic library of games, most of which still hold up today, almost 25 years later!
So, let’s get the weekend started by digging through some of the BEST games on the Neo Geo, and get our 2D itch scratched!
