The limu (seaweed) research of two students from UH Hilo, Lauren Runnels and Ian O’Hollaren, mentored by Professor of Marine Science Karla McDermid, has won second place in a nationwide competition of the U.S. Department of Energy. The research team presented their poster, PowerPoint presentation, 25-page report, and the above video on their project "Up-cycled Vertical Bag Culture of Halymenia," at the AlgaePrize Grand Champion Competition Weekend held in July 2025 at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado.
