Marie Owens Thomsen, SVP Sustainability & Chief Economist, IATA, talks about the aviation industry outlook:

🗣️ "We are looking at a 2.1% growth in passenger traffic and only 0.7% growth in cargo traffic. That these numbers are positive at all is encouraging at this stage."

🗣️ "2.1% growth in traffic is not a big number but it is positive, and that's to notably the airlines taking some extra cost on their margins and making it possible for people to travel."

Even in the best of times, the airline industry as a whole suffers from low margins and returns below the cost of capital. The oil price shock has tested airline financial resilience as net margins have been squeezed to 2.0% globally.
