Ave Fénix: Work for tenor saxophone and tape (February 2021)

“Throughout the centuries, male names have prevailed in the history of music. This has led to believe that there have been few female composers, creators, mentors, improvisers and performers, or that they have no interest in being participants in this art; even, that their lives and works have not been documented and that this lack is not the responsibility of the institutions.
However, if we took a temporal and historical journey through the various corners of the world and of history, we would realize that this is nothing more than a generalized false belief, reproduced for many reasons. Various historiographic documents, from older tablatures and testimonies, to videos and documentaries, show us that the hand of women has always been, is and will be present. "

Ave Fénix is ​​an account of the lives of many women in music, creators, performers, students and teachers. Because they have made sexist comments to all of us, we have all suffered harassment and discrimination in the academic and work environment. We have all felt that we were swimming against the current since the first day we decided to dedicate our lives to music. It is common to hear phrases like "You study music while you get married, right?" or "If you want to play and you dress like that, they won't let you go on stage huh."
This story focuses on the tenor saxophone, who is our protagonist, our woman who develops in the musical field, surrounded by the electroacoustic track, which represents the environment that we have to face every day, at first it seems that she is afraid , who is careful, but always advances by listening; listening to the laughter, the teasing, the insulting and harassing phrases ... And in a moment she listens to herself and realizes that they have broken her, hence boom! She decides, creates and adapts a position, despite the "you're crazy" ... And it is better to be ...

Abuse and gender violence, from a superior position, whatever the abused group, today is not excusable under any circumstances, not even alluding to the tolerance of past times. Justice must act without hesitation and delay, applying the weight of the law to all those who have used their position of power and social and labor hegemony, to force non-consensual and until now silenced behavior.

Violence against women has to end!

“A lo largo de los siglos, en la historia de la música han prevalecido los nombres masculinos. Esto ha hecho creer que han existido pocas mujeres compositoras, creadoras, mentoras, improvisadoras e intérpretes o bien, que no tienen el interés en ser partícipes de este arte; incluso, que sus vidas y obras no han sido documentadas y que esta carencia no es responsabilidad de las instituciones. No obstante, si hiciéramos un viaje temporal e histórico por los diversos rincones del mundo y de la historia, nos daríamos cuenta de que eso no es más que una falsa creencia generalizada, reproducida por muchas razones. Diversos documentos historiográficos, desde tablaturas y testimonios más antiguos, hasta videos y documentales, nos demuestra que la mano de la mujer siempre ha estado, está y estará presente.”

Ave Fénix es un relato de la vida de muchas mujeres en la música, creadoras, intérpretes, estudiantes y maestras. Porque a todas nos han hecho comentarios machistas, todas hemos sufrido acoso y discriminación en el ámbito académico y laboral. Todas hemos sentido que nadamos contra corriente desde el primer día que decidimos dedicar nuestra vida a la música. Es común escuchar frases como “Estudias música mientras te casas, ¿cierto?” o “Si quieres tocar y te vistes así, no te van a dejar subir al escenario eh”. Este relato se centra en el saxofón tenor, quien es nuestra protagonista, nuestra mujer que se desarrolla en el ámbito musical, rodeada de la pista electroacústica, que representa el entorno al que nos tenemos que enfrentar día a día, al principio pareciera que tiene miedo, que va con cuidado, pero siempre avanza escuchando; escuchando las risas, las burlas, las frases insultantes y acosadoras... Y en un momento se escucha a sí misma y se da cuenta que la han roto, de ahí ¡boom! Decide, se crea y adapta una postura, a pesar del "estás loca"... Y es que es mejor estarlo...
