Conversion Video 61: Upgraded Shocks DIY Skoolie 2022-01-19 | This is a long lost video that I recently found. I don't know why I forgot to upload it. This was filmed in late 2020. The upgraded shocks have made a noticeable difference in how the bus rides. It's much more smooth and feels like it is sitting much more firmly on the ground...if that makes sense.At this point, the bus is pretty much complete. I have my eye set on making some mechanical upgrades here and there, but there's not much else to do. The future of this channel will probably be more about what I use the bus for. Unfortunately, at the time of this upload, the world is still in the midst of a global pandemic, so we have not taken many opportunities for epic trips in the bus. Conversion Video 60: Water Pump Pressure Switch Upgrage/Repair DIY Skoolie 2020-09-22 | My water pump, like many other RV water pumps, has a built in pressure switch. Unfortunately, this pressure switch is often built cheap and has a tendency to fail. Mine lasted a few years with minimal use, before it started failing to cut the pump after it hit the maximum pressure. This causes water pressure to build up in the line far beyond what the appliances and plumbing is meant to handle, which can cause damage. In my case, the pressure valve on my water heater, which is a safety mechanism to prevent damage to the plumbing of the water heater, tripped and started pumping water out the side of the bus. After it started happening frequently, I knew it was time to make a change.Many people will replace the pump at this point, which can be an expensive and time-consuming prospect. Instead, I bypassed the pump's built-in pressure switch with a more robust pressure switch that is built for well water pumps. Conversion Video 58: Shore Power with Inverter/Charger and Dual Inverter Upgrade DIY Skoolie 2020-06-25 | On our trip to Skooliepalooza in the middle of January, the Solar and Batteries had a tough time keeping up with the winter weather. The tank heaters draw a lot of energy, which is tough for a boondocking machine with no generator. I never expected to drive in conditions like that, but now I want to be prepared for that inevitability.The little Morningstar inverter we have is a nice little unit for charging phones, but would never be able to handle any kind of power tools for a prolonged period. It would be nice to be able to work out of the bus on other projects off-grid.This video shows how I solved both of these problems with a dual-inverter setup that included the installation of a marine inverter/charger with 30 amp shore power receptacle. I show you how I installed the new inverter to work in harmony with the old inverter. I also show you how I wired up my breakers, 3-Pole AC Rotary Switch, AC electrical panel, and 30 amp shore power receptacle for the upgrade.The 2000 watt Inverter/Charger allows us to use shore power to top up the batteries and use larger electrical loads without drawing them down. When we're not using a bunch of high-load tools or appliances off-grid, 2000 watts is overkill. Conversion Video 57: Decorative Ceiling Trim to Combat Condensation DIY Skoolie 2020-06-11 | When I installed my ceiling, I created a thermal bridge from the interior to the exterior, which bypasses my insulation. I didn't think it would be a big deal at the time, but in practice, it's proven to be a serious problem with condensation. Condensation happens when warm moist air condenses and sticks to cold surfaces. It's why windows sometimes get fogged up. On the ceiling, each of my exposed screw heads were a different temperature than the interior, because they conducted temperatures from the exterior of the bus! To combat this, I sealed each screw head in adhesive sealant and covered them with decorative trim. This saved me about $400! I want to be able to put gear, bikes, or a motorcycle under my bed. For maximum flexibility, I wanted it to move completely out of the way, rather than just tip up to reveal storage. The bed floats on cables. The cables can be cranked in, which causes the bed to ride up them. Conversion Video 45: Hot Water and Plumbing Tests DIY Skoolie 2019-05-23 | In order for me to move forward with the build, I needed to test the plumbing for proper function and leaks. If there was a problem with the plumbing, it would be much more difficult to fix with the walls up. So, before everything got enclosed, I carefully turned on the systems one valve and device at a time to make sure there were no issues. Spoiler alert: there were issues.One issue was the shower. I couldn't get cold water out of it. In the video, I mention that I took the mixer apart and checked to make sure it was working properly. After putting it back together, it miraculously seemed to work like normal, which made me wonder if I had done something during the reassembly. After some later research, I discovered that I didn't do anything to change how it functions. The mixer is a "pressure balancing" mixer that requires equal pressure of both water temperatures to function. If I only get pressure on one side, it simply does not allow water through it. So, after I reassembled the mixer, and turned it on with both the hot and cold water pressure connected, it functioned like normal. Conversion Video 39: Battery Isolator Install for Alternator Charging DIY Skoolie 2019-03-22 | Installing a Battery Isolator to charge the house batteries off the engine alternator, and charge the engine batteries off the solar panels. This device took my power management to a whole new level. I had originally intended to contract this part out, but could not get any plumbers, RV specialists, or gas contractors to come out. Conversion Video 25: Installing Hood and Exhaust Ducting DIY Skoolie 2018-03-30 | Since I have a gas stove, I needed to install a vent over it. It was a bit of a process, but I like the end result.The video is a little confusing. What happened was that the termination of the duct wouldn't lay flat against the curve of the roof. So, I opted to attach only the bottom portion of it to the exterior of the bus. The rest was held in by how it was attached to the duct work. This left a big gap at the top of the duct that worried me. I sealed it in with roofing sealant, but it still looked too sketchy to me. So, with the sun going down, I quickly improvised a piece of flashing and installed it over the top. This left a big gap between the flashing and the top of the duct that I then filled with insulation and roof sealant. It took some "massaging," but I am confident it won't leak now. Conversion Video 20: Plumbing the Sink and Installing Drain Vents DIY Skoolie 2018-01-28 | I'm basically just copying what I found on youtube. ABS seems really easy to work with. I should have done a video on routing the drains under the bus. I have some snippets here and there, but it was really difficult and exhausting and cramped under the bus. Really, however you imagine it's supposed to go, is how it went. Just running pipe from your hole in the floor to the grey water tank, 10 home depot runs to get the pieces, shapes, tools, and supports you need, and curse at your hands for 10 hours straight.Once that's done, you get to just work inside the bus and figure out stuff like this! Plumbing the sink was much more fun than installing the drains. It's also the most complicated parts because it's not just a straight-forward uniform pipe setup. Figuring out how to physically connect the sink to the drain was a much more difficult mental exercise than connecting elbows under the bus. I am very happy that I went with all the venting that I did for the lines, too. Conversion Video 19: No-Weld Grey Water Tank Install DIY Skoolie 2017-12-04 | Installing the Grey Water tank using bolts and metal that I had on hand. This video is from this summer. The delay is because I was opening a bar called Coindexter's, selling some houses for a bunch of clients, and then I got married. Somehow, I just couldn't find the time through all of that...Also, my math was wrong on the tank weight capacity. 75 gallons of water weighs about 625lbs. The tank is pretty light, so lets just say 650lbs to be generous. Divide by 5 struts, means each strut must be able to carry 130lbs. The weight on each bolt is not evenly distributed, but even split, each bolt must hold about 22 lbs. even if there were only two bolts per strut, they would each need to be able to hold at least 65 lbs, which I believe they can...easily. I thought the next weak link might be the super strut channel itself, but according to an engineering spec sheet that I found online, one steel strut has a pullout capacity of 2000lbs. So, I'm not worried about that anymore. I am very confident that this method is good.
