A stage in the restoration of a clockwork automaton by Gustave Vichy of Paris. The mechanism has been cleaned and re-installed. You can see the oval Vichy stamp on the brass plate. This model was based on the Dahomeian Minstrels seen performing in music halls and on the streets in Paris in the 19th century. The proud leaning back stance was typical of the Dahomeian style. I found this old video of a restoration from long ago and decided it was too interesting to lose.
