I wasn’t after an alcoholic drink. Water would have done. Air Italy provides pre-departure drinks in business class, so does Air Baltic and pretty much ever other airline around the world. But for some reason the legacy carriers in Europe have stopped serving pre-departure drinks in business class.

Normally it’s not a big issue – but when the flight is delayed well over half an hour – it’s 40 degrees outside and the air-conditioning is turned off. Surely then it makes sense to serve everybody (including economy passengers) a glass of water. It is probably also the safest thing to do. But not to Austrian Airlines – part of the Lufthansa Group. To them rules are rules. And rules trump logic and customer service every time.

Luckily this was only a small blight on an otherwise fine flight. If you look past the economy class seating in business class this was actually a very nice flight on a newly renovated aircraft that was fully wifi enabled. Once the service started it turned out to be excellent with a drink from the bar served with roasted nuts followed by a delicious and filling lunch.
