Active Towns | Austin Freeway-Fighters Looking to Halt I-35 Expansion @ActiveTowns | Uploaded September 2023 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Community members are striving to stop a massive expansion of Interstate 35 through the center of Austin, Texas, and several prominent local, state, and national politicians have joined the fight. Join me as I ride with Adam Greenfield and Kelsey Huse to learn more about this initiative and why it is so important that the city reverse the damage that has been inflicted upon the community by this highway by rerouting it around the city.
What you will see in this video: We start at the 4th Street and Trinity Street car-free public plaza in front of the Convention Center, Downtown Cap Metro Rail Station, and protected and separated cross-town cycle path. We then roll down this well-used Dutch-inspired cycle path (notice the world-famous Dutch red/terracotta pigment in the concrete) under I-35 into east Austin. We then make our way down to the Butler Hike and Bike Trail, which will be negatively impacted for years if the expansion takes place. After that, Adam and I explored some of the neighborhoods that will be (and have been) impacted by I-35, including a school a mere stone's throw from this dangerous, polluting monster.
