On May 18th, 2011, the City of Austin Texas Council called a special meeting of the Committee for Health and Human Services to hear information and presentations on water fluoridation from both sides of the issue.
The representatives of the Council present at the meeting were Mike Martinez, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Austin, and Councilwoman Randi Shade, who both asked some very pointed and informed questions concerning the public health policy of drinking water fluoridation.
Proponents representing the dental profession and Austin Water Department were present.
Opponents representing the Fluoride Action Network and Fluoride Free Austin were also present. One of the opponents is a local dentist.
It is not often that a municipal government will actually allow an equally timed debate in a public forum to hear from experts from both sides. It is even more rare for an environmental chemist such as Dr. Paul Connett to be allowed to give his presentation of scientific information on the subject.
