According to a government-commissioned survey, Australia's environment is in a shocking state and faces further decline from amplifying threats.
The report was handed to the Morrison government in December last year, but the former environment minister didnât release it before the election.
Every category except urban environments was classified as having deteriorated since the last 2016 report.
Among the litany of problems documented were observations that:
-Non-native plant species now outnumber native ones,
-The number of species listed as threatened has increased by 8% since 2016, and
-Australia has lost more mammal species than any other continent.
In response to these findings, the current government is adopting a new target to protect 30% of Australiaâs land areas by 2030, will develop new environmental protection legislation for next year, and work on restoring existing damage.
