► They're not real either, sorry! I use Synthesia, and sometimes a free tool called MIDI visualizer

JUNO-D storage and polyphony specs:
► Roland doesn't state polyphony officially because it varies based on what's going on. I tested around 90 voices if you use a single partial and single sine wave, and then got dozens of voices when testing more complex sounds (60+ when using an organ preset). Roland says it may go up to 256 voices depending on how you use it.
► Streaming from USB drive: Roland says there are no limits on song length
► User samples in ram: 3 minutes (64MB)
► There's no way to create MSAMP (multisamples) on JUNO-D itself, but you can import them, for example, if they were made on a FANTOM
► You can load up to 2 EXZ expansions assuming you don't use up the sample memory on user samples.

HOW DOES KEYLAB MK3 COMPARE TO KEYLAB MK2?

► Pros for Keylab MK3:
Better screen (full color vs two-line character display) makes it much easier to control and access - various settings and parameters, with 8 contextual buttons
Touch-sensitive knobs, and faders let you preview parameter values
Built-in arp with generative arp features (no arp on MK2)
Scales (no scales on MK2)
Chord strum voicing and spread, though no chord banks like MK2
Wood sides and better design (I know that's subjective...)
The keybed is better, feels a bit more premium, but not in a "night and day" way

► Pros for Keylab MK2:
CV outputs and input, more pedal inputs
16 pads vs 12 pads on MK3
More buttons for direct parameter control, including Track buttons

The allure of Eurorack - building your own synths. Drone synth patch notes in description

loopop 2024-01-21 | The allure of Eurorack - building your own synths just the way you want them. Well, perhaps just putting together other peoples’ modules to assemble the instrument you want to play... but close enough!

This mini drone synth is made of only three modules (OK four if you count two copies of Gliss).

Mojave from @QuBitElectronix is responsible for most of the drone magic here. It’s a granular synth module, but unlike any I’ve seen, it excels at pitch-shifting grains across different intervals and scales to create a storm of melodies and harmonies, and on top of that has a buffer that lets you use it like a long delay, as well as a built in reverb and quite a lot more.

Wave Transformer is a complex oscillator from @EarthQuakerDevices - but quite unlike most complex waveshapers you’ve seen. Traditional ones use wave folding techniques; this one crumples waveforms in quite a more aggressive way, especially if you let its sub-oscillators in (I wasn’t that brave in this patch!). It also has a VCA mode, but drone oscillators don’t bother with such nonsense when real estate isn’t plentiful.

Finally, Gliss from @BelaPlatform seems like just a simple touch surface, but it has multiple modes, including acting as a wavetable synth(!). In this patch, I use its note mode on the left Gliss and motion record on the right one.

Note mode lets you program up to 5 notes on the surface. It’s both pressure sensitive (mapped to add harmonics on Wave Transformer here) and lets you create glides between notes - really cool IMHO!

Record mode lets you record motions and then play them back. In this case I’m modulating through Mojave’s buffer with it.

Audio is recorded with a smidge of @ArturiaOfficial Rev LX-24 and some @WeAreElektron Heat “Enhance” mode for fun.

The case is a custom little wooden one built by 2ManySynths it doesn’t come with power, so there’s a little @tiptopaudiofficial uZeus hiding inside, and the 90 degree cables are Tendrils.

► The synth engine is pretty much the same. On the oscillator side, the VA and DWGS oscs are the same. Many of the PCM (sample) sounds are new and there are about 10 more of them. Filters and FX are the same, as are the mod options.

How does KeyStage (KS) compare to NI's Kontrol MK3 (KMK3) - as of the making of this video:
► KMK3 is more expensive than KS
► Both have polyphonic aftertouch that feels more or less the same, maybe slightly finer control on the KMK3
► Key action is softer, quieter and with less travel on the KMK3
► KMK3 has touch-sensitive endless encoders, a better choice for automapping parameters compared to KS's pots. The pots also seem to have lower resolution.
► KMK3's screen is way better, larger, has color graphics, letters are bigger, clearer
► KMK3 is quite larger in terms of depth, leaving less room on your desk
► Currently MIDI 2.0 is implemented in way fewer places than NI's NKS, and therefore NKS is more useful
► Ableton Live integration has device controls on KS but no levels/sends, and vice versa on KMK3 (I'd prefer device controls, personally)
► KMK3 doesn't support MIDI 2.0 currently, but has that option in one of the settings menus, so there's a good chance NI might support it - though not clear which part of it and whether NI will support property exchange
► KS has on board arp and chord modes, KMK3 doesn't yet, but NI has committed to implementing it.
► More pedal inputs and touch slider on KMK3
► KMK3's build feels more premium (buttons, encoders, wheels)

►►► A NOTE REGARDING THE DC COUPLED OUTPUTS:
No worries, the outputs are DC coupled. Apparently at some point VCV Rack changed their default output setting to BLOCK (!!!) DC Coupled signals. I wasn't aware of this, and when I tested the interface, it seemed like the outputs were AC coupled. Oh well, you live and learn.

THOUGHTS ABOUT KONTROL S88 MK3:
After making this review, I received the S88 MK3 from NI for review. Some background: S88 MK3 from Native Instruments is the first and only MIDI keyboard I’m aware of that has both hammer-action weighted keys and polyphonic aftertouch. The only other weighted 88-key PolyAT keybed alternative I’m aware of is in the Montage M8X (review coming up soon), which costs and weighs much more, but also comes with a built in Montage…

For a look at all the non-keybed related features of the S88 (screen, knobs, functionality, etc) see my full review on youtube - everything is exactly the same. This post is about the feel of the keys on the 88, as opposed to the semi-weighted S49 keybed covered in the review.

vs Piano keybed - my pro piano play friend Raz says the keybed feels slightly more weighted than pianos he’s used to playing, and there’s less “bounce back” when you lift your finger off the keys - which takes getting used to if you play fast like he does. That said, it’s certainly something he can practice with compared to regular semi-weighted keys.

The keybed is relatively quiet compared to other MIDI keyboards I’ve tried, which is a good thing.

On the poly aftertouch side - the travel distance is very similar to the semi-weighted S49 I reviewed - meaning about 1-2mm of travel on the white keys, and around 1mm on the black keys.

Because the keys are weighted, unless you play relatively softly, you’ll trigger a certain amount of aftertouch with every keypress - meaning that if you play with above average velocity, you’ll get some aftertouch modulation along with it, so you may need to adjust your presets aftertouch modulation accordingly.

Finally, none of the MK3 S series comes with a power supply. That’s not an issue if you’re using the S88 with a computer that can give off enough juice, but if yours doesn’t, you’ll need a power supply that can power it - a regular USB charger may not do the trick (see specs for details)

Here's a list of the tips in this video:

1. Many synths have "hidden" parameters you get can access using MIDI controllers - for example, oscillator levels in the case of OB-X8. Check out the MIDI CC appendix of your synth!

2. If your synth happens to have inverted polarity square and saw waves, matched at the right levels you can create interesting octave trill (with a square LFO) and morph (with smooth LFO/envelope) effects.

3. Analog FM is hard to control in a way that makes it playable chromatically. Harmonic frequency ratios work better, but if that doesn't work, consider reducing the level of the carrier (the "metallic/noisy" LFO) and pairing it with a higher level "regular" oscillator.

4. Since you can point the Vibrato LFO to just one of the oscillators, you can use it with oscillator sync (routed to OSC 2), leaving the main LFO or filter envelope to do something else.

5. Filter tracking is important if you want to make sure notes levels don't get attenuated by the filter the higher up you play, or if you want to emphasize specific harmonics as you play up and down the keyboard, for example, to create organ like sounds.

6. Use high pass filter with resonance aimed at the fundamental as a bass emphasis

7. Use key triggering of the LFO alongside an arp or sequencer to help overcome the lack of LFO tempo sync

8. If you synth has a "bend in" portamento option, it actually has a dedicated pitch envelope! In the OB-X8 you can point this bend portamento to just one of the oscillators. You can use this as an osc sync envelope for OSC 2, or as a pitch envelope for OSC 1, which, along with XMOD, can make fantastic percussive sounds

9. Audio rate vibrato LFO + aftertouch pointed to LFO mod depth = expressive magic!

10. In some synths (like this one) LFO mod depth is quantized in semitones - that makes for easy to program/tune trill square LFO effects when pointing the LFO to pitch.

11. Point velocity to the filter frequency but not VCA level for expressive control over the filter cutoff without hurting sound levels.

12. OB-X8's hold is really a sostenuto not a regular latch.

13. Since the OB-X8 lets you play over latched drone notes/chords, be mindful of the velocity with which you play the held notes because they're going to be around for a while.

14. Not happy with your synth's arp or lack thereof? Turn LOCAL OFF and use an external arp.

15. OB-X8 has a funky relative knob mode - follow Van Halen and switch to Jump mode
