► There's no specific integration between launchpad and M+, I just made a custom layout on my launchpad that sends the MIDI notes M+ expects to see to change to specific scenes. To activate this, you need to turn on MIDI Change in M+, which lets you control scenes, sections or locks using notes or program changes. For a nice step by step description search "MIDI change" in the manual (it's section 13.1). I mapped the notes manually in a custom Launchpad template to make it match the colors and arrangement of scenes on M+, so that it would be easy to use and remember.

► A comparison to KeyStep 37:
Pros for KS37:
- The keys are wider and deeper (see the comparison in the video) - obviously this is subjective
- Aftertouch
- Strum mode
- Custom chords and scales
- LEDs on above the keys make editing the sequence easier than the small screen on MPK Mini Plus
- You can transition between the stored sequences seamlessly as part of a performance - they stay in time whereas on the MPK they do not
- Live recording into the sequence saves ties (as opposed to not recording them on the MPK)
- USB power and regular power (as opposed to just USB on MPK)
- Metal base may make it sturdier but it's heavier too.
- Can send MIDI out the MIDI port when plugged into a computer (as I mention in the video, MPK Mini Plus disconnects the keyboard from the ports for some reason, and you have to route MIDI through your computer back to the ports to send MIDI out)
- Knobs can be configured to go to different MIDI channels (pads and knobs can only go to one channel each on the MPK)

Pros for MPK Mini Plus:
- It can control 3 instruments at once - sequence 2 tracks + arp or playing the keyboard. KS37 is only either/or on the arpeggiator/sequencer
- 8 Pads, joystick, physical mod/strip controls transport for DAW control (KS37's transport is just for the internal arp/sequencer
- Screen allows for easier customization and operation
- DAW integration
- 8 physical encoders as opposed to 4 knobs (though there are 4 banks on KS37 for a total of 16 parameters)
- Note Repeat mode for the pads

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE AUDIO OUTPUT?
It wasn't intentional, but I forgot to address the audio output because it doesn't do much as of the current firmware at the time of the review. It outputs a sine wave at the frequency of the main melody. It doesn't play the additional notes if you play chords, and the only waveform is a sine wave. Hopefully, they add more functionality there in a future firmware update!

INTRO SETUP:
A word about the setup in the intro: Misha isn’t connected to Vector Wave directly. For the intro/outro jam, I ran midi out from Misha to my computer so I could render the laser notes shooting out the module, and I then sent Misha’s midi to an arp plugin on my computer, and then finally to Vector Wave via its midi input the front panel.

► Filter FM patch correction:
In the Filter FM patch in the video I say you should patch MULT 1 into the LFO RATE INPUT (which is correct) but, since it was late in the session I guess?... I plugged MULT 1 into the LFO OUTPUT, and you shouldn't really do that... though apparently, Mavis didn't explode. It still sounds good which is why I didn't notice it, but you should do as I say and not as I do... thanks @wavrekordz for pointing this out

SETUP FAQ: Wait, why is there no MIDI cable connected from the Keystep to the Volca?!
► You could do that, but for this video, the Keystep is connected via USB to an off-camera computer - I needed to go through a computer because I wanted to send MIDI notes from my Keystep but also SYSEX from Dexed, so the computer was also acting as a "MIDI merge" box using Ableton Live, hosting both Dexed and another channel routing MIDI from Keystep to a USB MIDI interface (built in to my audio interface in this case) and from there to the Volca via a 5 pin MIDI to TRS A adapter cable to the Volca FM2.

Jogging House Patch Notes: I modulated the wave position of one oscillator with a fast cycling envelope to make it crackle, then used the two other envelopes to gently fade in the volumes of oscillator two and noise. A bit of filtering to taste to shave off too harsh frequencies.

monome norns review // community soul in a music computer // 10 scripts explored

loopop 2021-08-26 | IMPORTANT - A recap of the versions of norns:

(1) The $800 fully built stock norns by monome, plug and play, aluminum enclosure, white screen, more audio IO, no ethernet - not currently in stock as of the writing of this comment

(2) The updated norns shield reworked to solve noise issues on the input - sold for $280 directly by monome - yellow screen - easy to assemble, no soldering, but you'll need to buy a raspberry pi model 3b+, sd card, USB cable and 2A+ power supply separately

(3) The full DIY version - monome does not sell this, you have to source all of the parts yourself including the PCB and enclosure, and solder it together yourself or with the help of a builder - you choose the screen color - yellow or white.

IMPORTANT: if the PCB you buy says "191106" on it (November 2019) like the one in the video, it's the open-source OLD version, before the input noise re-work - PCB should be at least 210330 (March 2021) when monome open sources it - not currently available as of the making of this video
