The Sodor & Mainland Railway first saw it’s opening in 1853 until it all came to an end for its queer little engines 48 years later in 1901. The railway’s former number 2 ‘Neil’ however was sold to the Crovan’s Gate Mining co that year & worked there for a good 30 years before being withdrawn due to a lack of money preventing the company from repairing their now worn down 75 year old locomotive. After another 36 years out of commission, the engine was eventually bought by the then North Western Region’s controller, Sir Charles Topham Hatt II, for special rail tours until the engine was taken out of service once again in 1970 & put on display at Crovan’s Gate next to the Skarloey Railway.
