This has nothing to do with books (other than that it has spurred me on to reading more about climate change), but I shared this message on instagram and thought I'd put it here too:

Hi. I don’t know how best to say this but I am from The Bahamas and two of the northernmost islands in my country have just been thrashed by #HurricaneDorian and are now in dire need of emergency aid. The destruction is severe. Certain charities haven’t always done right by little island nations so I’ve researched and consulted friends from home before sharing.

There’s a list of places to donate to help the relief effort in The Bahamas specifically at bahamas.com/relief

@charitynav also has a list of organisations (with information about the legitimacy and transparency of each) focused on the Hurricane Dorian relief effort.

I had never heard of @headknowles242 before but Bahamian circles have vouched for them saying they have been an excellent, local, quick responder in the past. They have created a GoFundMe page
gofundme.com/f/headknowles-emergency-funds and are working with @oasisbahamas to bring in food goods.

@bahamas_redcross_society & @seahorseinstitute242 are accepting donations online to be distributed where needed.

An excellent source of information is also my friend @thegoldenstitch_
If you are unable to donate, PLEASE consider sharing information (whether this post or any other you come across).

EDIT: I need to clarify that two of our northern islands have been very badly hit but most of The Bahamas is still fine and money from tourism and commerce (our two biggest industries) could really help the recovery effort of those two northern islands. So don’t shy away from booking your winter holidays in The Bahamas. If you are (understandably) concerned about hurricanes, feel free to book outside of hurricane season, which runs from June to November.
