The elements of the Horror Genre I am examining are:
1. Setting/Sense of Place – Do you/I need to relate to a place and feel safe in order to get scared/or for the characters to be frightened.
2. Do you/I need to relate to the characters to be frightened for them?
3. The “Roller Coaster” effect. How important are the scary, popcorn spilling scenes to a scary book/movie?
4. The other elements - I have forgotten that is/are important.
Horror/Gothic Genres:
1. Creature Feature: Best represented by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Stephen Kings IT and Scooby Do.
2. Possession: Usually Demonic but can be by other things. The Exorcist and Head Full of Ghosts are some of the best examples.
3. Gothic. The Brontës tell some of the best know tales here. You need a Smart but plain female hero, a large house, isolated atmospheric setting and a dark brooding gentleman.
