Two days ago, I read this news on the Verge titled: ‘Instagram is hiding faked images, and it could hurt digital artists’. It caught my eyes immediately. From the article, I learned that since December 2019, Instagram is hiding photoshopped images from its Explore page to combat misinformation.
In Instagram’s Info Center, it did not state what is misinformation or how much retouch is allowed. Instagram has its evolving algorithms to determine. I would interpret this ban on potentially anything forged and deceiving, including fake news and wrong body ideals achieve by tools like Photoshop.
This policy has a good intention, but it also caused some collateral damages. Some digital artists, performance artist and photographers might be affected by this new rule.
