The three day hike to the Atsgara lakes. Atsgara lakes or the "Pyatiozerye" (Five Lakes) valley are located in the Urup region of Karachay-Cherkessia, about 30 km from the village of Arkhyz. This is a scattering of five picturesque lakes, usually visited in conjunction with the Zagedan lakes or the lakes of the Abishira-Akhuba ridge.
The Atsgara lakes lie in a mountain circus between the pass of the Zagedan lakes (2732m), the Zagedan ridge, the Nadezhda pass (2500m), the Zagedan rock (3085m) and the beginning of the Atsgara river valley. Previously, due to its proximity to the Zagedan ridge, the "Pyatiozerye" was ranked among the Zagedan lakes. However, later, in order to avoid confusion, these reservoirs were named after the Atsgara River, at the source of which they are located.
In the tourist environment, the Atsgara Lakes are often called the “Five Lakes of Arkhyz”, although in fact the sources of the Arkhyz River begin almost 10 km from here at the eastern tip of the Zagedan Range.
