Amazing Atlas robot can walk unaided and is the most human like walking robot invented to date
The new version of the Atlas robot by Boston Dynamics is the most advanced human walking robot ever invented. It is designed says, Boston Dynamics, to operate outdoors and inside buildings.
It can not only stand and walk by itself but is seemingly quiet and has an advanced sensor system that means it can walk on almost any terrain without falling over.
This is a major breakthrough, since just a few years ago, previous versions of the Atlas robot, could barely walk, and often fell down. The program manager Gill Pratt of DARPA at the time called the previous prototype versions of the Atlas only a few years ago, to a small child, saying. "" it's like a 1-year-old child that can barely walk, a 1-year-old child falls down a lot."
That was only a few years ago, now the new version of the atlas robot, can walk without any aid. Standing only 5 feet 9, it only weighs 180 pounds or 82 kilograms. A long way from its counterpart, which weighed 300 pounds.
The new version of the Atlas robot can carry heavy loads as well as be programmed to perform certain other duties like stacking shelves. It is said to be intended to aid emergency services in search and rescue operations, performing tasks such as shutting off valves, opening doors and operating powered equipment in environments where humans could not survive.
Such as locations that would be unfit for human operators, like those with chemical or biological agents.
The new atlas specializes in mobile manipulation. It is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and legs to balance, and it uses stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, assess the terrain, help with navigation and manipulate objects.
