On August 11, 1976, a 19-year-old climbed to the top of the Garvey Center, then a Holiday Inn hotel, bringing with him two rifles and a bucket of ammunition. He shot and killed a total of three people, injuring eight others.

The entire incident took place over the course of just 11 minutes.
