At my first job, I got an education on how to negotiate for a higher salary.
I complained because I was doing more work than I felt like I was being paid for. My boss, Belinda, surprised me by saying I was a great employee and asked how much of a raise I would need to make me feel better.
I hadn't thought this far ahead and replied with an outrageous amount. Instead of shutting me down or offering me a smaller raise, Belinda asked me what I was planning to do if I didn't get the raise I needed.
A little nervously, I told her I was considering grad school. Belinda lit up and started asking me questions like, "do you need to visit schools? What if we could buy your plane ticket using the company credit card miles. Is there a job title here that would improve your application?"
She kept looking for creative ways for us to both get what we wanted. We worked out an amazing deal where I would keep working for her for another year, and she would help me get into grad school by asking me questions.
Belinda found out what I needed to feel valued, and I learned my first lesson in the power of interest-based negotiating.
