Next 12 dec. 2023, asteroid (319) Leonia will occult one of the brightest stars of the sky: Betelgeuse, the famous Alpha Orionis.
For a few seconds, the star will completely disappear, so Orion will temporarily loose one of its star.
This short and very rare occultation anticipates something going to happen in the future. We know that at some point Betelgueuse will explode as a supernova and after being incredibly bright for a while, it will fade and disappear. So, Orion fate is to “loose” Betelgeuse and this very rare occultation give us a glimpse on a future we will likely not see.
Because of the size of Betelguese (a supergiant), we will likely see the star gradually disappearing and reappearing.
