The rapid expansion of offshore in on the North Sea will help the Netherlands to meet targets for green house gas reduction. However, a large increase in offshore turbines may have effects on the ecosystem that we currently do not fully understand. This presentation gives the first results of a research project under WOZEP (the offshore wind research program of the Dutch government) where we try to assess the effects offshore wind turbines may have on currents, waves, fine sediment dynamics and the growth of phytoplankton.
