Lamon Lawhorn, Coordinator of Percussion Studies at Virginia State University and Vater Percussion Signature Artist, joins Steve Weiss Music for this episode of Shop Talk, our YouTube series featuring percussionists discussing their careers, musical influences, education, and experiences in the percussion industry.

Filmed at the Steve Weiss Music studio in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, Lamon shares his journey from his early beginnings as a church drummer to becoming a professional percussionist, educator, clinician, signature artist, and leader in the percussion community.

Lamon discusses attending Prairie View A&M University and his experiences performing as a member of the renowned Prairie View A&M “McFunk Box” drumline. He reflects on the HBCU marching percussion tradition, the impact it had on his development as a musician, and how those experiences continue to influence his approach to percussion and education today. The conversation also explores Lamon’s time at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where he studied percussion with Ricky Burkhead, as well as the experiences and opportunities that helped shape his career and eventually led him to his current position as Coordinator of Percussion Studies at VSU.

Lamon offers advice for aspiring percussionists and music educators, discussing the importance of mentorship, versatility, relationships, hard work, and taking advantage of opportunities throughout your career. He also shares his involvement with the Percussive Arts Society and the journey that led to becoming PAS President-Elect.

Finally, Lamon reflects on his longtime relationship with Steve Weiss Music, from shopping with Weiss as a percussion student to working with the company as a professional artist and educator. He discusses the knowledge, experience, customer service, and percussion industry insight that have made Steve Weiss Music a trusted resource throughout his musical career.

Join us for this episode of Shop Talk with Lamon Lawhorn as we explore HBCU marching percussion, drumline, percussion education, career development, the Percussive Arts Society, Vater Percussion, Virginia State University, and a lifelong passion for percussion.
