This session examined the return of industrial policy as a tool of strategic influence and national resilience. The panel explored contemporary challenges in shaping the Australian and Japanese defence industrial bases. Panelists also considered how governments and industry must balance sovereignty and interdependence, while navigating trusted supplier requirements, export controls, and the regulatory and structural changes needed to ensure readiness and sustainment in future crises.

Speakers included Oleg Vornik, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of DroneShield, Kate Louis, Head of Defence and National Security at the Australian Industry Group and Executive Director of the Ai Group Defence Council, Osamu Nishiwaki, Deputy Commissioner of Japan's Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency and Glenn Keys, Executive Chair and Founder of Aspen Medical. The session was moderated by Courtney Stewart, Senior Resident Fellow at ASPI.
