Signal integrity (SI) refers to the quality of the electrical signals as they travel through a printed circuit board (PCB), connector, or cable.
In a perfect world, digital signals are clean square waves like the ones shown in the image below. But in high-speed systems the signal gets distorted by:
π Transmission line effects (impedance mismatches)
π Reflections
π Crosstalk
π Power/ground noise
π Electromagnetic interference (EMI)
Even things like board layout and vias start to matter a lot when you're working at GHz speeds.
