This week on Ask an Engineer, we’re answering a common fabrication question:
“Is width-wise bending an option at Protocase?”
Width-wise bending refers to bending across the length of the sheet, perpendicular to the metal grain. This method produces stronger bends, reduces the risk of cracking, and can be crucial for certain enclosure designs or structural parts.
At Protocase, width-wise bending is absolutely possible, but it isn’t the default for every job. Parts with multiple bends in close proximity (like 5-sided enclosures) often require a mix of bends both parallel and perpendicular to the grain.
If your project relies on width-wise bending for strength, alignment, or structural integrity, make sure to mention it during quoting so our engineering team can evaluate and guide you.
