Processed vermiculite from the WR Grace Libby MT Mine contained tremolite, a form of asbestos, that found it's way into local homes and has caused hundreds of cases of asbestos related disease in this small mountain town. EPA instituted a decontamination program for the town and the contaminated residences. Currently, studies are ongoing to determine where the Libby vermiculite was shipped to and sold across the US. Dr. Levin (1941 - 2012) was an internationally known expert in occupational medicine and asbestos related disease and Dr. Levin is the longtime medical director of the Mount Sinai- Irving J. Selikoff Center for Occupational & Environmental Medicine and prior director of the World Trade Center medical monitoring and treatment programs. He was Professor of Occupational Medicine in the Department of Preventive Medicine of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He graduated in 1967 from the New York University School of Medicine. After a decade of practice in General Medicine in Pennsylvania, he came to Mount Sinai to receive his training in Occupational Medicine. Following completion of his training, he joined the Mount Sinai faculty. He spent the remainder of his career at Mount Sinai, rose through the academic ranks and was promoted to full Professor in 2011. He was Co-Director of the WTC Worker and Volunteer Medical Screening Program, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which provided medical assessments, diagnostic referrals and occupational health education for over 20,000 workers and volunteers who performed rescue and recovery work at the WTC site. He served as Principal Investigator and Director of the Data and Coordination Center for the federally funded WTC Medical Monitoring Program that provides repeat examinations for the WTC responder cohort. Dr. Levin also served on the Science Advisory Board for the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO).
