Let's talk about one of the more misunderstood passages in the Bible, which is Matthew 24:37-42. This passage actually means the opposite of what most Christians think it does. Here's what I mean. First, the passage reads as follows in the King James. "But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days that were before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came and took them all away. So shall also the coming of the Son of Man be. Then shall two be in the field, the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill, the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come."
Now, here is how this passage is misunderstood. In verse 37, Jesus first talks about what happened in the days of Noah and how it will be the same when he returns. That part is clear. In verse 38, Jesus further explains how people were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage just before the flood came. Again, the meaning is clear. The meaning of verse 39 is also obvious which is about how they did not know what was about to befall them until the flood came and took them all away. Jesus added that it will be the same when he returns. Now however we come to the part that many of us misunderstand and that is verses 40 and 41. They read then shall two be in the field the one shall be taken and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill. one shall be taken and the other left.
The misunderstanding is that the reference to the one being taken is about the rapture. However, Jesus told us what he meant in the previous verses and it's just the opposite. In verses 38 and 39, he explained that those who were taken by the flood were the ones who were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage. In other words, those who were taken were the ones who were lost. So just like in the days of Noah, those who are taken when Jesus returns will be the ones who are lost. The ones that are left are the ones who are saved. The words one will be taken do not refer to a rapture, but to how people will be lost or taken just like they were during Noah's flood.
The teaching is about how at the return of Jesus, the sheep are separated from the goats. One will be taken and one left. It is the goats who will be taken or removed and the sheep who remain to enter the kingdom of God. This lesson is also repeated in the parable of the wheat and the tears.
