We were so honored to have Bella Ciao, a world anthem of antif*scism, close out our wedding party, the entirety of which was so blessed with the klezmer kumbia fusion of Mariposas Galacticas
It just so happened the guy who worked with our venue at the German Society of Pennsylvania to make sure everything ran smoothly during our celebration was a Palestinian man who had never been able to visit his home country. He approached us with tears in his eyes when the party was over, and told us that he had never expected to hear the words “Viva Viva Palestina” at this historic German cultural hall – and I would understand if he expected it even less from a Jewish wedding. We would have talked all night if we didn’t have to leave, about my husband’s family who fled the N*zis, about the slab of the Berlin wall in the courtyard (like Ben, he had also lived in Germany for a number of years and found another beloved home there), my keffiyeh, and the connection that we share between Jewish and Muslim peoples that is so much more ancient than the bloodshed and g*nocide that continues now at the hands of that murderous theocracy that calls itself the State of Israel.
Our wedding was no less traditionally Jewish for our strident wish for a free Palestine. In fact, as I’ll continue saying again and again, the deepest values of our religion, our culture, and our history all point very clearly in one direction: against oppression, against colonialism, against fasc*sm, against war, against g*nocide.
As a proud Jew: Viva viva Palestina, now and forever.
