Today I'd like to take you to an art exhibition at Today Art Museum in Beijing. It's one of the oldest private art museums in China, but it's far from a traditional one.
Today's exhibition is 'FAS-It's not possible' featuring 40 renown and emerging artists around the world. FAS stands for Fun & Fashion Art Space, a high-end art mall. You can find their art merchandising store on WeChat.
In this exhibition, you will see many lookalikes of Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Duchamp, Cattelan and Ron English. A large portion of the works here were inspired by other famous artworks. You might ask, is it legal? Yes, it is legal to copy an art style. As long as your work doesn't share substantial similarities with the renown artist's work, you are ok to sell your art. But is it a smart way to hitchhike on their fame? It's a different story.
In their marketing, you can see terms like 'BFF of KAWS', 'Basquiat', 'Godson of Andy Warhol' etc. They might be effective marketing tactics, but not great long term strategy to build an art brand. What would you do to make a name for yourself? This exhibition provides us with some good examples for this discussion. What do you think? Let me know in a comment below.
