On April 1, 2026, NASA’s Artemis II mission sent astronauts to the moon for the first time in over 50 years, marking a pivotal moment in planetary science and space exploration.

Planetary scientists at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) and the College of Arts and Sciences are supporting the Artemis program by studying the moon’s extreme thermal environments, like the shadowy, cold craters in the moon’s South Pole. With this critical resource and ongoing exploration, we may understand more about the moon’s origin and how to sustain life on the planet.
