Roots of Knowledge by Dr Jurgen Kriel, Shannon Oliver, Tahnee Towers
Third Place – Moving Image
Imagine a tree with roots spreading underground, each root playing a vital role. Our brains are like this, with different cells serving a special purpose.
In this 3D model, you see purple roots (oligodendrocytes – cells supporting the central nervous system), green roots (astrocytes – cells that repair damaged neurons) and their golden centres (nuclei – cells that store the genetic information of each cell).
Like gardeners working to protect their land from harm, researchers Jurgen, Shannon and Tahnee study how to protect our brain – in this case, from cancer.
They create special models that mimic the formation of brain tumours. This allows close investigation of the changes from a healthy brain to a tumour environment.
Models like these help us understand the brain and discover better treatments for devastating brain diseases.
