The parametric equalizer came about in the late 1960s, thanks to George Massenburg and Burgess Macneal. The duo was designing a console for ITI at the time, and they craved more than the standard EQ.
What would follow would be an incredible legacy of gear that began with the ME-130 and ME-230, eventually leading to creations like the GML 8200 and Sontec MES-432.
The Sontec MES-432C/9 is considered the holy grail of mastering EQs, and we’re lucky enough to have this beautiful gem at the Vintage King Tech Shop right now.
"It has a beautiful, silky, ultra-smooth top end. You can significantly boost the air frequencies without introducing harshness or graininess. Even with aggressive boosts across its range, it maintains its natural imaging and depth," says Vintage King co-founder Mike Nehra. "It doesn't smear the stereo field, which is why it's been in high-end mastering rooms for decades."
