The Honoring Service series explores civic virtue and responsibility by highlighting the service of our nation’s veterans.
In this episode, former Army Sergeant Darin Pemberton talks with Vice President of Civic Leadership Development Gerald Gangaram about his career as a Non-Commissioned Officer and Army civilian employee.
Pemberton reflects on the lessons the Army taught him, including resilience and the ability to lean on peers and leaders who were committed to his success. The Army taught him loyalty, commitment, and courage, virtues that continue to guide him today.
Pemberton recently created RangeWalk, a nonprofit that brings mobility to veterans via equipment and opportunities they need to lead active lives. He felt committed to making veterans’ lives better, but encourages young people to find whatever passion motivates them.
For Pemberton, civic virtue also means not giving up on our fellow citizens, being open to others’ ideas, even when we disagree, and accepting that we have a common desire to improve our country.
