An increasing number of soldiers returning from tour and veterans are suffering from PTSD or Post traumatic stress disorder.
The effects can be crippling.
Here are some symptoms you may recognise:
Work-related or relationship problems
Feeling numb and empty
Feeling suicidal
Self harm and self-destructive tendencies
Being easily moved to tears
Avoidance of people and places
Panic attacks/anxiety/depression/mood swings
Feeling isolated
Frequent periods of withdrawal into oneself
Nightmares/flashbacks/insomnia
Anger or aggressive behaviour
Feeling distrustful and suspicious/blaming others
Misuse of alcohol/drugs/gambling and/or food
Seeking out high-risk/dangerous pursuits
Flashbacks can be terrifying triggered events where the person relives traumatic scenes.
Flashbacks can be triggered but the littlest of things, a simple walk down the street for a soldier or veteran can soon turn into a flashback where he or she finds themselves back at a traumatic event.
If you, a family member or friend suffer from PTSD please seek help with one of the many uk based charities designed and committed to supporting soldiers/veterans and giving them the help and advice they need to move forward and improve their quality of life.
