Arles was founded by the Greeks around the 6th century BC and became one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire under Julius Caesar. The Arles amphitheatre, built around 90 AD, seated 20,000 spectators and is still used for events today. Vincent van Gogh spent 15 months in Arles in 1888โ89 โ his most prolific period โ producing over 300 paintings and drawings including Cafรฉ Terrace at Night, visited at 2:08:08.
