Arlee has a healthy respect for the ocean and its unpredictability. He was first welcomed to Umupuia Beach in Maraetai through Te Toki Voyaging Trust - Waka Hourua programme.
A key reason behind volunteering with Te Toki is to strengthen his relationship with Tangaroa and get over the fear of being on the open water.
This training takes place at Maritime Museum and is about connecting over the kaupapa. “It's about learning with one another and building that relationship between cultures. Every morning we do whakawhanaungatanga, and you get to learn about one another.”
Arlee welcomes our wonderful visitors to the Zoo each day and has been learning sign language to better connect with more of our community – which he sees as a vital aspect of his role.
