Saria's ground color has to be black before you get hit by the smarties and especially before the boss spawns. Do not toggle another ally's color at this point yet.

After the boss died for the first time, immediately change Saria's, Thorns', and Eyja's color. Do not change Exia's color since she was deployed 2nd last and will tank the boss' secondary attack.
