This video documents a westbound drive along Interstate 40 from its junction with State Route 3 East in Shawnee to Council Road (Exit 142) on the west side of Oklahoma City. The footage was recorded in 2016, capturing this corridor before the Kickapoo Turnpike existed and before several later infrastructure changes reshaped traffic patterns east of Oklahoma City. As such, the drive offers a useful snapshot of central Oklahoma’s primary east–west artery during a transitional period.
Departing Shawnee, Interstate 40 quickly sheds its small-city surroundings and enters a landscape defined by open land, frontage roads, and widely spaced interchanges. This stretch reflects the practical design priorities of the Interstate era: long sightlines, gentle curvature, and efficient movement across the Southern Plains. Development is present but restrained, reinforcing I-40’s role here as a through-route rather than a destination corridor.
Moving west, the gradual approach toward Oklahoma City becomes evident. Interchanges increase in frequency, frontage roads grow more active, and commercial and industrial development becomes more consistent. In 2016, traffic entering the metro relied almost entirely on surface arterials and I-40 itself for east–west and north–south distribution. The absence of the Kickapoo Turnpike is noticeable in hindsight, as regional traffic had fewer bypass options around the eastern edge of the city.
Closer to Oklahoma City, the highway adopts a more urban character, with warehouses, logistics facilities, and multi-lane interchanges reflecting the metro’s role as a regional transportation hub. The drive concludes near Council Road on the city’s west side, an area that continues to function as a major arterial gateway within the Oklahoma City network.
While understated visually, this segment of Interstate 40 clearly illustrates how Oklahoma’s highway system functioned prior to recent expansions. It serves as a clean, uninterrupted record of a working Interstate corridor just before a major new turnpike altered long-distance and regional traffic flows.

Traveling west from the interchange of Oklahoma Highway 66 and Interstate 44 in southwest Tulsa, this route offers a captivating journey through the rolling terrain and small-town character of northeastern Oklahoma. The video follows OK-66, which closely parallels—and in many places, is—the historic alignment of U.S. Route 66. Leaving Tulsa, the road passes through suburban areas and into the community of Sapulpa, where the pace slows slightly and the scenery begins to reflect the older highway corridors that predate the interstates.
Just west of Sapulpa, the route transitions onto a notable stretch of the original Route 66 alignment. This short deviation captures a glimpse of what early travelers experienced decades ago, with the road narrowing and weaving gently through the countryside. This historic segment continues for several miles before rejoining the more modern alignment near the junction with Oklahoma Highway 33. From there, OK-66 continues its westward path with a mix of rural surroundings and periodic roadside relics—remnants of an era when Route 66 was the nations Main Street.
Approaching Bristow from the north, a short segment of the highway is bypassed due to a brief detour near E-0770 Road. While the detour interrupts the direct route, the video resumes at the intersection with Oklahoma Highway 48, just on the edge of Bristow. This segment of Arkansas Highway 9 begins in Melbourne, a city located in Izard County. Melbourne, with a population of 1,848 as of the 2010 census, is the county seat of Izard County and home to the main campus of Ozarka College.
The route from Melbourne to Mammoth Spring is part of the Ozark Plateau region, known for its mountainous terrain and scenic beauty. The highway meets AR 56 in Brockwell before exiting Izard County and entering Fulton County just north of the intersection with AR-354 in Oxford.
Upon reaching Fulton County, the highway meets AR 354 in Oxford as it continues northeast. Intersecting with US 62 / US 412 and Arkansas Highway 395 in Salem, the route then travels northeast to Mammoth Spring, a city named after Arkansas’s largest spring and one of the largest natural springs in the world.
Mammoth Spring, with a population of 929 as per the 2020 census, is renowned for its trout fishing and is home to the Mammoth Spring State Park, which features a 10-acre lake formed by the spring. The spring flows nine million gallons of water hourly, making it a popular tourist attraction.
Scenic Highway 9 terminates at the intersection with U.S. Route 63, just across the street from Mammoth Spring State Park. The video ends a few feet prior to this intersection at a local restaurant.

Now driving south, we continue through Holland for almost 4 miles before turning east again to leave town. At the Holland town limits, we end the ride from Greenbrier to Holland turning south at the intersection with Arkansas Highway 36.

The journey begins in Garland as Interstate 30 climbs onto the entrance ramp crossing Lake Ray Hubbard. After spanning the water, the route enters Rockwall, where the interstate threads between local highways and growing suburbs before continuing eastward into Fate and Royse City. A stop at Buc-ee’s marks a classic Texas travel experience before rejoining the highway for the open road ahead.
From Royse City, the route heads northeast toward Greenville, crossing major routes like US-69 and US-380 as the city spreads out around the interchange. Continuing east, the highway stretches toward Sulphur Springs, a regional hub along the interstate, before passing through smaller communities like Mount Vernon and Mount Pleasant. This portion of the drive transitions from open farmland into more wooded terrain, with thicker groves of trees providing a scenic backdrop.
The final miles between Mount Pleasant and Texarkana highlight the quieter side of Northeast Texas. Limited exits and services mean longer uninterrupted stretches of highway until reaching New Boston and Hooks, where the Red River Army Depot looms just off the interstate.
