A playthrough of Nintendo's 1997 Super Nintendo game, Arkanoid: Doh It Again.
Played with mouse controls on the normal level.
Bringing the Arkanoid name back after a ten-year hiatus, Doh It Again was the third game in Taito's series of "Breakout clones," and it was the first to be designed specifically with the home audience in mind.
After years of drifting through space, the starship Arkanoid comes across a planet that seems perfectly suited to host a human settlement. The ship sends a probe, Vaus, to the surface to check things out, but it's a trap! Doh - the malevolent space entity whose plans have now been twice foiled by the Vaus - desires vengeance and captures the approaching probe. As the pilot of Vaus, it's your job to defeat Doh and secure a brighter future for the people aboard the Arkanoid.
Using the Vaus as a paddle, you bounce an energy ball against a wall of colored bricks, and once all of the bricks in a stage have been destroyed, you move on to the next. There are 99 rounds split across three 33-round stages, and each is capped with a boss fight against Doh.
Arkanoid: Doh It Again doesn't attempt to reinvent the wheel. It repackages the series' classic gameplay with a few extra bells and whistles to appeal to a new audience, and it succeeds brilliantly. The mouse does an excellent job replicating the feel of the analog dial controls of the Arkanoid arcade cabinets. The absurdity of the plot-driven cutscenes, the timeless gameplay loop, and the inclusion of multiplayer modes and a level editor keep you coming back for more, and the password system makes picking up where you left off a breeze.
I love the Arkanoid series, and I find Doh it Again to be a gem among gems. It's unfortunate that, like so many late 90s SNES releases, it went completely ignored by the masses. Under different circumstances, it might've become another major Taito hit.
