The Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research institution that aims to solve the world's most pressing problems through innovative solutions.
To explore and analyze data faster than ever before, Argonne researchers are using large language models (LLMs). LLMs use natural language processing, which means that scientists can type a question and get an answer back in a readable format.
However, working with an LLM isn’t like asking a search engine to give you directions or recommend a great restaurant. The questions or “prompts” you ask need to be carefully worded to guide the models toward desired outcomes. While a well-worded prompt can save scientists time, an inaccurate prompt can lead to misleading or irrelevant results.
Argonne's scientists are researching advanced prompt engineering techniques that help LLMs complete specific tasks and applications. In this video, experts Thomas Brettin, Nicholas Chia and Priyanka Setty discuss how scientists ask different types of questions to talk to LLMs and get the information they need.
