Many people turned to making breads of all sorts during the early days of the pandemic. For some, bread baking offered a sense of control and a way to fill the void as the realities of quarantines set in. More recently, others have embraced making and sharing bread as a call to action, a way to advocate for racial justice. What makes bread so powerful? In partnership with the Smithsonian Cares initiative, Smithsonian food historian Ashley Rose Young reached out to cookbook author and culinary educator Sandra Gutierrez to discuss the power of bread and learn how to make arepas.
