America turns 250 this July 4th. 🇺🇸
But the story of English settlement in America begins long before the Declaration of Independence. In 1634, the first colonists of Maryland stepped ashore at St. Mary's City, carrying with them hopes of religious freedom and a new life. Some were governors. Some were servants. All played an important part in the founding of what would eventually become the United States of America.
23andMe researchers, working with colleagues at Harvard and the Smithsonian, analyzed their DNA and found over 1.3 million people with genetic connections to this founding settlement. We just added 29 of them to Historical Matches.
The strongest connections are to people with ancestry from England, Wales, and Ireland. And if you have Kentucky roots, you may have an especially close link to these early colonists.
