Script Below:
By historical standards, we are in the upper echelon of security and comfort and convenience.
At a whim most of us can watch any movie or TV show that has ever existed, have any food we desire delivered to us, and purchase essentially any product we can imagine. We can communicate with anyone in the world instantly, and travel to see anyone in the world in a matter of hours.
Never has mankind lived with so much.
While we are at the pinnacle of creature comforts, our happiness has not risen to match. In fact, we are less happy than our ancestors.
Depression is rising, suicide rates are up. But beyond that, there is a palpable sense of vanity in our culture. We jump from distraction to distraction, fearing we might be alone with our own thoughts for a moment. We seek the attention of others for validation. We think working as little as possible will make us happy. Or that if we just work enough, we will make enough money to be happy.
We have abandoned our humanity in the pursuit of trivialities. Things that men and women of all ages would have taken for granted as a means to a contented life we disregard entirely.
It’s not just that we are unhappy. We have no clue how to get there.
There may be an opportunity some time in the future to search out the answers to the question of happiness. But most of us are too far gone. We need to start one step back.
Rather than ask “How can I be happy”
We must ask “How can I be human?”
And we will do just that.
Follow me in this series, as we learn from the ancients how we might recover parts of our humanity. Each video will consider a text from an ancient work of literature, philosophy or religion, and seek to unpack the truths that they knew which we seem to have forgotten.
The first video has been released in conjunction with this one.
Here we will discuss Plato’s Tripartite soul and how we can improve ourselves using gymnastics?
