“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” Psalm 51:17
Sacrifice — a divesting of oneself and a giving unto God.
Broken — to break down, to destroy, to crush, to tear apart.
Contrite — crushed, collapsed, brought low, bowed down, humbled.
God is not looking for outward ritual, but an inward humility and contrition. An emptying of oneself, and a yielding to God.
True Scriptural brokenness is the key to spiritual blessing, and in this passage it is described as something that God requires, a sacrifice that is well pleasing unto Him. Brokenness is the sacrifice that God Wants.
To those who are broken, God promises His presence.
“The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.” Psalms 34:17-19
Here, righteousness and brokenness are interchangeable. Brokenness leads to righteousness. Everyone who is righteous has been broken. There is no such thing as a righteous person who has never been broken or been emptied of himself.
God’s people must abandon pride and self in order for brokenness — and righteousness — to come. Those who own horses will tell you that a horse must be broken before it can be used.
