Nice and kind aren’t the same thing.
Sometimes kindness risks your reputation.
Niceness often begins with the question:
“What will this person think of me?”
Kindness asks something harder:
“What would actually serve this person?”
Sometimes that means having a conversation they may not want to have or saying something true even though they may leave frustrated with you.
That's why kindness can be costly.
You may have to tolerate someone being disappointed.
None of this gives us permission to be careless. Honesty without care can do real damage.
The work is learning how to tell the truth without using it as a weapon.
Niceness protects how we are seen.
Kindness is willing to risk that when something more important is at stake.
