In April 2012 a group of us were privileged to visit villages on the outskirts of Karbala , Iraq where residents live in the direst of conditions. Sanitation, living environment, little or no access to electricity or healthcare were just some of the conditions we witnessed the very young as well as elderly coping with on a daily basis. The most captivating part of that day was seeing the broadest of smiles on the children's faces when welcoming visitors to their villages. They warmed and reciprocated our affection and playful moments.
