For decades, video game movies had a terrible reputation. Most of them were poorly made and completely missed what fans loved about the games. But in the last few years, something changed.
In this clip from one of my Patreon livestreams, I talk about why video game adaptations are suddenly succeeding and whether they could become the next dominant trend in Hollywood the way superhero movies were for the last 15 years.
Part of the shift is generational. Many of the writers, directors, and producers working in Hollywood today grew up playing Nintendo, Sega, and PlayStation, so they actually understand the source material. At the same time, modern video games have evolved dramatically with more cinematic storytelling, deeper characters, and richer worlds, making them much easier to adapt into films and TV shows.
You can see this in the success of projects like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Last of Us, and Fallout, which appeal to completely different audiences while all coming from video game franchises.
So are video game adaptations replacing superhero movies… or is this simply the next evolution of blockbuster storytelling?
