Are these Mormons?
No they aren't Mormons but they are very similar. Both are lead by a charismatic leader who claims to have the key to returning to heaven. Both believe that through prayer and their feelings they can know that the message they are hearing is true. Both believe that they must progress as God does. This is the product of New Age thinking being mixed with Christianity. It is not Christianity but a corruption of it.
The members of Heaven's Gate could have easily known that the message was not true if they investigated it. That is why Marshall Applewhite told them to rely on their feelings instead.
