In today’s video, I explore some fascinating spiral-shaped bacteria known as spirochetes, found in a water sample from a local pond. After adding a bit of food to the sample and letting it sit for a few days, I was thrilled to find these bacteria along with several ciliates and Paramecia. Interestingly, these spirochetes are almost the same size as the ciliates, creating an unusual size comparison!
I also discuss the precautions needed when handling certain bacteria, as some spirochetes are associated with diseases like Lyme disease. While these particular spirochetes came from pond water and aren’t necessarily dangerous, disinfecting the workspace afterward is essential to prevent any potential spread.
